Breastfeeding Support,Tongue-tie Assessment & Division
Mondays 10-2pm (alternate)
Whilst breastfeeding is the normal way to feed a baby it does not always come easily. Sometimes it can be difficult to access all the help and support you need through the NHS. We can help with a range of breastfeeding problems including weight gain concerns, sore/damaged nipples, concerns about milk supply, premature and babies with special needs, twins and other multiples, thrush and mastitis. We also have expertise in the diagnosis and treatment of tongue-tie, which can cause feeding issues in both breast and bottle fed babies.
Tongue-tie affects about 10% of babies, and occurs when the movement and function of the tongue is restricted by the presence of a piece of skin (known as a frenulum) which stretches from the underside of the tongue to the floor of the mouth. Some tongue-ties are very apparent when the baby cries; others are hidden further back and are frequently missed, leading to delayed diagnosis and treatment.
Tongue –tie division is a simple procedure taking a few seconds and whilst feeding can improve dramatically immediately after the division, it may take some babies time to adjust their feeding technique. So skilled breastfeeding support and advice is essential before and after the procedure.
